Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
